The Helvidius Group - Journal of Politics & Society
Columbia University's Journal of Politics & Society

Organizational Structure

The Helvidius Group has several different affiliations and relationships within Columbia University.

As an undergraduate student organization, the Helvidius Group is officially an academic club recognized by the Activities Board at Columbia (ABC), a governing board that oversees 154 different student organizations on campus. About 60% of the Group's annual budget is allocated by ABC, which in turn is funded through student life fees pooled from the undergraduate population. Students in each of the university's undergraduate schools—Columbia College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, General Studies, and Barnard—are thus eligible for membership.

The organization receives financial support from the sale of the Journal, subscriptions, advertisements, and donations. Read more in the Support section.

As an ABC organization, the Helvidius Group is advised by the Student Development & Activities office within the Division of Student Affairs. Currently, David Milch serves as the Group's adviser for all non-academic issues.

The Helvidius Group also maintains a quasi-official relationship with the Department of Political Science. Despite the Journal's interdisciplinary focus, historically the majority of essay submissions have developed from political science papers. The department provides administrative support, as well as academic guidance through the Group's faculty advisor, the Robert and Renée Belfer Professor of International Relations, Jack Snyder.

As a subsidiary of the university, the Helvidius Group enters into contractual obligations and holds copyrights under the auspices of the Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York, a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The Columbia name and crown are used with permission.
